This next song is the first song I have written and my first public performance of an original.  This song is about my two favorite wooden stages: this stage right here - built on a hayrack flatbed here in Paoli, and a stage a few miles south in Nashville, TN.  Before I play the song, I want to say that I am well aware that I may never have the chance to play on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

I have also learned that simply being willing to have a dream and to believe in yourself is sometimes just as important as reaching the destination you are seeking.  I learned this by watching our four children.

You see, during the past year or so, our kids were each trying something new and challenging.  We had new basketball tryouts and games, first-time swim team practices and meets, first-time boxing lessons and sparring, and first-time wrestling matches and tournaments.  I learned so much from watching each of them put themselves out there, work through struggles, and grow through their experiences.

On a separate but related note, our family was excited to visit the Grand Ole Opry for the first time recently.  Before the Opry show started, I jokingly said to the kids, “Where do you think you will be sitting when I play here for the first time?”

Our youngest raised an eyebrow and slowly turned toward me, “Dad, it wasn’t that long ago you said you were fine with playing guitar in the basement, but you wouldn’t play in public."  I teared up a bit as I responded, "And each of you showed me how to be confident and have fun trying something new."

In a way, this next song is an homage to our four amazing kids, and my best friend and wife, who have encouraged me and taught me how to be brave.  It is also a nod to honoring those who came before you while being willing to learn from our younger generations.

Lastly, this is a Happy Birthday wish from Paoli, Wisconsin to the Grand Ole Opry - CELEBRATING 100 YEARS and GOING STRONG!

This song is called “600 Miles To Go” and it is written in response to (and sandwiched between) a song written in 1985 by Max D. Barnes and Troy Seals, and recorded by George Jones, titled “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes”.

As always, feel free to sing along.
